When children have the opportunity to color, they engage their independence and self-expression. What colors should they choose? What should they draw? What will it look like? Will it be big or small? Will it have lots of colors or just one color? Will the faces be smiling or frowning? Chances are, the answers to their questions are either consciously or subconsciously expressing themselves or their emotions. Drawing is a chance for your child to work through his or her emotions and to express themselves in a safe environment. Children may not always have the words to say exactly how their feeling, but coloring will let your child express himself without needing the vocabulary to do so.
Coloring is becoming accepted within a University setting as a tool for students to maintain focus. Theresa Cinderella, a student studying art therapy at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. said that “A lot of my fellow graduate classmates bring these coloring books into the classroom setting as a tool to focus more on lectures.” She explained that more professors are beginning to welcome this behavior. “For my internship, I find the clients who are fidgeting and cannot sit still ask for coloring in books in order to concentrate on group discussions.”
I’m sure you have seen purple skies and pink grass when you last came out of your house. No? Well I guess you’ve seen that on your child’s latest coloring book. I believe that is the beauty of this activity. Children are not bound to rules. They just use whatever color they like and apply it on the picture. As a preschool teacher, I recommend that you just let your child color the way he/she likes it. As mush as possible, refrain from instructing what colors to use. Or worse, criticize them. Instead, let them develop their creativity and imagination by giving them free reign on what colors to use. Anyways, there’s plenty of time of them to follow rules when they grow up. For now, let’s just let them be creative.
